Heroes of Humanity recognizes the heroes in our community and champions the hero in you through its annual national program that honors and celebrates individuals and organizations across the U.S. who serve society and uplift human values.

Heroes of Humanity are all around us. They may be sitting near you in your workplace, they may be researching a cure for cancer, they may be teaching your child or acting as mentors to at-risk youth, Forming the fabric of selfless service, they enrich our world by uplifting human values in daily life. The Art of Living Foundation and the International Association for Human Values cultivate service in our community in concrete ways for today's need. Through educational programs that help release stress and through humanitarian initiatives around the world, these organizations are rekindling human values in every corner of society while cultivating an attitude of service as the norm and not the exception.
By honoring every day heroes from all walks of life, we hope to recognize these heroes’ important contributions and inspire others to pursue uplifting service in their own lives. We believe this will, in turn, foster such human values throughout the world as nonviolence, peace, compassion, and enthusiasm for life, creating violence-free, stress-free, and productive communities.
Heroes of Humanity Awards November 1-9, 2009
Heroes of Humanity is a nationwide effort involving individuals and communities in 50 cities across the U.S. Each city will organize and host an event that will confer Heroes of Humanity Awards to people and organizations who exemplify a dedication to human values and service in their community.

The Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Award for Uplifting Human Values
The Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Award, is a special Heroes of Humanity Award, inspired by and named after the world renowned humanitarian, His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. This award recognizes an individual or organization that embodies the values of integrity, compassion and non-violence in their dedication and service to humanity. The recipient of this award will be honored at their city’s Heroes of Humanity event.
More About The Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Award
Like the Heroes of Humanity Awards, the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Award is given at each Heroes of Humanity event to members of society who are uplifting the community, but it has been established to give special recognition to those individuals or organizations whose contributions command special notice for their commitment to human values in our communities. These individuals create a better world.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s message and programs of compassion, commitment to society, and a universal understanding of life have inspired and impacted the lives of millions worldwide. Through the regeneration of human values, he seeks global peace and development by bringing about sustained individual commitment to joyful living, selfless service and self-awareness. He has put this into action by creating the Art of Living Foundation and the International Association for Human Values. The Art of Living Foundation is represented in more than 150 countries, making it among the largest of the United Nations’ accredited non-governmental organizations in the world.
In selecting candidates for the award, the committee looks to the following factors:
- Demonstrates a commitment to upholding the human values that unify our community
- Exemplifies the spirit of compassion and respect, and uplifts individuals
- Works to build an understanding between multicultural communities
- Employs nonviolent means for creating social transformation
- Initiates change for greater understanding of environmental concerns
- Implements creative solutions for conflict resolution
- Is dedicated to generating harmony in our society
A committee from Art of Living, IAHV and external partners reviews candidates in light of these criteria. In making the selection, the nominees may meet three or more of the criteria established above. The recipient will receive the award on the date of respective city's event.
